I don't really like getting political in this forum since its difficult to have a genuine discussion with someone with an opposing view, but I'm really confused by the recent push by Kerry and those opposed to the war regarding the supposed missing explosives in Iraq.  They are making it sound like this is the most explosive stuff out there, capable of setting off nuclear bombs and arming hundreds of missiles, etc.

Wouldn't we have been looking for exactly this kind of thing when we went into Iraq?  The absence of such material was precisely the argument that was used to call the war unjust.  Wouldn't the existence of this material qualify as WMD evidence, and, if it was present when our troops went in, wouldn't we have been waving the flag over it and shouting, “here it is!!!”?  And if the International Atomic Energy Association (is that what its called?) indeed knew about this stuff, wouldn't they have been announcing its existence and supporting our position in front of the U.N. that Iraq was a grave threat?

There were supposed to be hundreds of tons of this stuff (which would have taken a major operation to remove).  And the quote I heard was, “and it's so explosive that only a pound took down a Pan-Am flight.” (nevermind that I don't think it would take much explosive at all to bring down a plane)  If it's true, it just seems like a blatant admission of the threat that Iraq posed to us, and then invalidates the assertion that Bush is unfit because he rushed into an “unjust“ war.  If it's untrue, then there is more strong evidence that John Kerry is an opportunistic liar.  Either way, things don't look good for Kerry.

Of course, I am open to differing conclusions from people who know more about the explosives.

[UDPATE 3:17pm] Here's another insightful opinion similar to mine.

A site I read for good information and differing opinions is:
http://www.beggingtodiffer.com/
Two posts of interest, Explosive by Kriston and Final Moves by Steve that contain differing opinions and links to some good information. In the comments for Steve's post, there is a comment by philgrad that goes into some detail about explosives in laymen terms.

My opinion : October surprise by the Democrats. I am sure there will be one forth coming by the Republicans as well.

The explosives in question are RDX, which stands for Royal Demolition eXplosive, and is also known as cyclonite or hexogen. It is an example of an organic nitrate explosive. RDX is used in blasting caps and detonators, and can be combined with other compounds to form C-4, and Semtex. RDX is the primary base in most military explosives. Combined with other explosives such as TNT it forms what are known as cyclotols that are used in bursting charges such as aerial bombs, mines, and torpedoes.

RDX also has civilian applications such as fireworks, demolition blocks, and as an occasional rodenticide.

In short, since the 1920's if someone (particularly an army) wanted an explosion, RDX was probably involved. All of this information is available on the internet.

Does this count as a WMD? Of course not. Iraq had an army, and unless they planned on throwing rocks, that army had explosives. Every army on earth has explosives.

There was never any justification for overthrowing a sovereign government that didn't pose a danger to the US. Our government has deceived us; whether they did so through the sheer ignorance and thick-headedness of G.W. Bush, or intentionally to install a friendly, oil-rich government in a dangerous region, it was a deception which effectively leveraged the fears of the American people to achieve duplicitous ends.

It’s sad what W has done to our country. His very thinly veiled implications that those who descent or question his policy are un-American, combined with just the right combination of divisive rhetoric surrounding homosexuality and differences in American culture, have ripped this country in half. Exactly the opposite of what W said he would strive for during his 2000 campaign.

We should hope and pray that enough Americans can see through the torrent of divisiveness, deceit and manipulation to bring to an end the worst administration in American history.

BTW - If you don't want to blog politics, don't blog politics.
