The Canon stabilization *claims* to provide 2 extra stops past the "reciprocal rule" (if you're at 50mm, the slowest shutter you can hand-hold is 1/50s). But with my grip and extra battery (another biggie you should look at), I can easily hand-hold to 1/2s. I think my record was a night shot that was 2.8 seconds long. I rarely pull the drebel out of ISO 100 and the farthest I'll go is 400. I hate the digital noise, and my favorite films (from those days) are ISO 50-100 slide films (not at all forgiving with under-exposing), so I'm used to having to hold the camera super-still.

So for general purpose, I love my lens. It has semi-wide angle (28mm = ~45mm equiv.) at f/3.5 and semi-long reach (135mm = ~215mm equiv.) at f/5.6. If you need more zoom, the 1.4x or 2x converter is an option. I plan on getting the 10-22mm someday for my ultra-wide stuff.

I haven't studied how well the battery grip handles 2 batteries versus one, but it's hopefully at least twice as long. (Laptops sometimes can run longer than twice as long with two batteries using smart switching..)
