It's here!  My 2004 holiday wishlist.  First off, I don't post this to be greedy, I just think it's a handy way to let people know what kinds of things I'm interested in, let ME figure out what I'm interested in, and give me a future insight into what I thought was cool at this point.  Some of this stuff is way outside of what I would consider as typical “gift price range”, and I would never expect to get it.  I'll probably continue to update this as the holidays progress and I invariably cave in and get some things for myself or see something new and cool.  I'm going to categorize from the beginning since that's the way last year's turned out.

If, for some crazy reason, you're interested in actually getting me something, you might let Becky know in order to avoid duplicates (rebecky at dontspam mail dawt com).  I looked at several online wishlist sites to avoid that problem, but I didn't like any of them.  Any suggestions?

Video Game Stuff:

  • XBox Console - It's finally on my list.  I'll probably take care of this one myself. Got it with the help of some used games
  • Additional XBox Controller - This controller situation on the XBox is unclear to me.  There seems to be several official styles.  Which one is better?  Dave relates his distaste for them in the comments of a recent post.  What's the deal here? Evidently, the “S” controllers (that linked to) are the good ones according to the people I've talked to, and the consoles come with them now as opposed to old stupid ones.  Thanks Ben!
  • HD cables for the XBox - I don't have any non-component sources hooked into my TV now (5 total now).  Why stop? I was just getting really tired of composite.
  • XBox Live Starter Kit (w/ headset) - This is much cheaper than I thought it was. I've got 4-months XBox live free, and already picked up 1 communicator (Although I could use another)
  • Halo 2 - The reason for the above Thanks, Rich!
  • Any other recommendations for XBox stuff?

Computer stuff

Photography

Home Theater

  • Component Video/Audio switch - As I mentioned before, I'm out of inputs.  I have an older version of this that only does video.  This one does audio (optical/coax/stereo) as well and is auto-sensing!  Very cool.

Movies (DVD)

Clothes:

  • Coming soon.

Gadgets:

  • Green Laser - Jerry brought his by a few weeks ago and we had TONS of fun with it ... so bright.
  • Phidgets - I found these on Scott Hanselman's list.  Way cool!  I can think of some cool stuff I'd like to do with the RFID stuff.  I wish they had stepper motor controllers.  I might finally finish my electronic pan/tilt head.

More to come!  I'm out of time for now.

Feel free to post YOUR wishlist items in the comments.

Well, since it seems to be somewhat popular on the weblogs I read, here's my Holiday Wishlist.  I'm not doing this because I'm trying to be greedy.  First of all, this is more of a dream list than a realistic wishlist, but it should let people know what kind of stuff I'm into.  I'll try to keep it up to date with my latest whims.

Home Theater Stuff:

  • Samsung 50“ DLP TV - Ok, I'm crazy.  I have a very nice TV already...but come on!
  • Samsung HD DVD Player - 720p...enough said. (note: I know DVD's do not contain that kind of resolution...but come on!)  It would go great with the TV! I've taken this off the list.  It only up-converts to HD on the DVI output, meaning I'd need an expensive converter, or the above TV (which upconverts to 720p anyway).  Also, there's alot of talk on new HD DVDs. I think I'll go for a pc-based solution next time around.
  • Sony STR-DA3000ES - Ok, so this is the most reasonable thing so far.  I could go much crazier on a digital receiver, but Andrew's made me a believer in Sony ES again.
  • Sony Universal Remote Commander - I've got no less than 7 remotes, all of which I have to use at some point.  I've got some friends with this that say it is well worth it. Whoo hoo! already got it!!

Misc.:

  • Roomba Vacuum - I know I already have a nice vacuum, but this one's right up my alley.
  • Indiana Jones DVD Trilogy (Widescreen) - I just picked up The Two Towers set and figured Indie could wait a while.  (I won't fully delve into the widescreen/fullscreen debate here, except to note that fullscreen is a ploy to make more money from the uneducated consumer.) My boy Cooper came through BIG TIME!!
  • a Love Sac - These things are cool!

Computer Stuff:

Video Games:

Ok, some of these are ridiculous.

I was recently asked by a friend of mine lucky enough to attend PDC this year, "What sessions would you go to?"  Well, this is an experimental entry which I will keep updated with my "PDC Wishlist"  What sessions I would attend and maybe even why.

  • Chris Anderson's Avalon Talk -- Chris, whose weblog is the reason I blog today, is the original author of BlogX.  "What is Avalon?" you ask?
  • Don Box's Indigo Talks -- I see Don Box's name everywhere.  He's had some great insights in his blog.  Click to talk link to get an overview of what Indigo is.
  • Chris Sells if he's speaking -- He shows up on the speakers list, but doesn't appear to have a talk registered.  What's up with that?  Maybe I just haven't looked deep enough since I'm not actually going.  He's big on Longhorn, the next version of Windows.
  • Anders Hejlsberg's C# language enhancements talk.  This will give us the goods on generics and the other goodies they're adding like anonymous delegates, iterators, etc.
  • Anything else about Whidbey (next VS.NET/framework release).  I haven't found out who's doing sessions on this, but it should be a huge part of the PDC.  Generics will steal the show, but there's alot of other nifties in there as well
  • I'm not that interested in Yukon (next SQL Server), but if I had leftover time, I'd make some sessions on that.
  • I would definitely try to meet Miguel de Icaza.  He's head dude at Ximian which was recently aquired by Novell.  He wrote the Gnome desktop for Linux.  He's a fan of the CLR and heads the Mono project which is an open-source implementation of the CLR primarily targeted at Linux.  He's bound to be around somewhere.

I'll keep this list updated as I think/find more topics I'm interested in.  If anyone else has ideas on what's important to see, feel free to comment.
